Plymouth University, UK Completed in 2003, the redevelopment of the Portland Square site of the University of Plymouth provides new teaching facilities and a home to the New Peninsula Medical School. MERO (UK) PLC. provided the semi-unitised aluminium curtain walling to the three new blocks at the university. Through the use of a variety of glazing specifications, finishes and opacities, the complete façades of the building are clad in glass to give a uniform reflective appearance, whilst still meeting the privacy and lighting requirements within the different areas of the building. The facades were constructed from an aluminium Schuco glazing system, which MERO manufactured and assembled into the bespoke system units. These units incorporate a mixture of double glazed fixed windows, automatic and manual opening lights, doors, louvers and dummy louvers, all of which were brought to site as complete units ready for final assembly. Other parts of the building within MEROs scope of works included sloped atrium rooflights above the stairwells of the buildings, and horizontal overhead glazing above walkways. These installations again used a glazing system to provide a uniform appearance to the envelope of the building. Throughout the project, materials were selected to meet the tough specifications imposed due to the proximity of the buildings to the coast, and the corrosive marine environment they would be subjected to over their lifetime. Aluminium sections were fixed with stainless steel fixings and bracketry, and EPDM and PVC gaskets, spacers and packing pieces were used throughout. |
