_ Construction Systems _ _ Roofs _ _ Building Envelopes _ _ Facades / Curtain Wall _ _ Canopies _ _ Towers _ _ Atria _ _ Other _ Curtainwalling _ Raised Access Floors	_	The Deep, Sammys Point, Hull, UK At the confluence of the river Humber and the river Hull in Kingston upon Hull stands the new landmark building, ‘The Deep’, housing Europe’s deepest aquarium. Inspired by local geology, The Deep’s mixture of cladding materials and finishes makes this visitor centre an interesting and impressive building. The main attraction within the building is the 2.5 million litre ocean aquarium tank complete with underwater lift and 9m deep viewing tunnel, whilst the building’s main feature is it’s glazed café with an outside viewing platform that cantilevers out over the estuary. With a solid waterproof sub face of black painted aluminium, a mixture of mill finished aluminium and coloured glass panels were painstakingly arranged to form a rainscreen. This uses hidden fixings and carrier frames with varying joint gaps of 5, 40 and 70mm to show the subface behind and produce different visual effects. At the nose of the building, laminated glass panels were clipped to the supporting steelwork, whilst elsewhere a MERO ‘Varioclip’ glazing system with an aluminium cap was used to frame the numerous windows and glazed features. With precast concrete floors, elliptical steel sections and numerous cladding types, this project showcases the far reaching expertise of MERO. [Download this project as a PDF document]
