Stack 'A', Dublin, Ireland The redevelopment of a historic 19th Century Warehouse in Dublins Docklands into a modern retail and leisure venue, provides 13,000m² of mixed use floor space. The entire glazed façade to the West elevation needed to be self supporting so as to only pass minimal loads through to the ancient structures roof. This was achieved through the use of a cable net supporting the wall of glass, spanning horizontally between vertical steel pylons located at each roof gulley point. 20mm diameter cables were strung horizontally between each pylon on both the inside and outside of the façade, and spider assemblies connected to both cables pass through the glass fixings, bringing the cables towards each other and providing the required tension. These pre-tensioned cables, along with 8mm diameter vertical cables spanning between spider assemblies at each vertical glass joint, all act against each other to fully support and stabilise the wall. |
