The
Performance Wall, Peninsula Square, The Performance Wall, situated in Peninsula Square next to the O2 Arena (formerly the Millennium Dome), provides a striking backdrop and stage for outdoor events and speaking, and will be used among other things as the rostrum for the 2012 Olympics. The Performance Wall features a stage for free concerts and a large digital screen showing video displays, whilst rows of LED lights run vertically behind the ultra marine blue glass, providing a dazzling light show. The wall houses a number of services for the surrounding area such as those for the outside water feature which sprays geysers of water and mist over the square. The main structure is formed from steel RHS & SHS of differing sizes. The façade is ultramarine blue glass point fixed to stainless steel glazing spiders, which are supported by steel stub brackets fixed back to the main structure. Tolerances between the main structure and the façade are controlled by the use of a combination of steel shims, slotted holes and serrated plates. The rear elevation posed a design challenge by requiring interfaces between a number of different cladding systems. Insulated Kingspan panels incorporating fixed louvers cover most of the rear elevation. The Kingspan panels also interface with a Schuco frame fixed glazing system, which interfaces with the point fixed glazing on both side elevations. The sloped rear elevation and roof are frame fixed blue glass, with a bank of fixed louvers running along the top edge. The LED screen as the focal point on the wall is framed with a stainless steel surround formed from twelve individual panels. Stainless steel canopy arms cantilever out 4m past the façade and support lighting and camera equipment. Double doors either side of the raised stage provide access to the services housed within the wall. |
