The Torch, Chiswick, London

The Torch, Chiswick, London

The Torch, Chiswick, London, UK

As part of JC Decaux’s Premiere Landmark range of large format advertising billboards, ‘The Torch’ advertising tower situated next the M4 and A4 by the Chiswick roundabout in London, is expected to reach over 83 million adult impacts a year from it’s two huge 6.75m x 4.5m advertising panels.

Following a long period investigating various cladding options, the client finally opted for aluminium shingle cladding. He had seen this unusual and dramatic cladding technique whilst passing through Farnborough Airport where the new Terminal Building and Air Traffic Control Tower have recently been clad by MERO in aluminium shingles. MERO (UK) PLC. was awarded the cladding package to the tower at the start of December 2005, were on site at the beginning of February 2006, and completed and handed over the tower cladding in March 2006. Whilst under a cladding only package, part of MERO’s contract included supplying full setting out information for the purlins that were to carry the shingle rainscreen cladding. This involved fully modelling the tower in 3D, and through these models, each shingle size and shape was accurately measured and manufactured off site, then pieced together like a jigsaw enabling a very rapid installation programme.

Due to the access restrictions of the final site with a railway line, motorway and DIY superstore surrounding it on all sides, it was decided that the tower would be entirely fabricated and assembled in the main contractor’s factory in Wales, and transported to site in two sections for final erection. With the final tower measuring over 30m high, each 15m high section was manufactured and clad horizontally, before being transported to site under police escort. Over the course of two nights, the main contractor lifted and bolted each section into position before MERO returned to stitch the cladding together at the joint. The setting out of the shingles on each section was critical to ensure that this joint could be quickly and seamlessly installed from cherry pickers on site. JC Decaux have had delivered a striking tower that will draw the attention of passers by to it’s advertising for many decades to come.
