Heathrow Airport Terminal 3 Check in Kiosk, London, UK Located directly adjacent to Heathrow’s Terminal 3, the Kerbside Check-in Kiosk is located beneath one end of, and partly sheltered by, the 138m long ETFE canopy also provided by MERO-SCHMIDLIN. The Kerbside Check-in Kiosk provides a relaxed personal check-in service exclusive to American Airlines’ First & Business class passengers away from the busy main terminal check in area. To enable the terminal to remain fully operational during construction, a complex installation programme had to be adhered to. To meet this requirement, the main steel frame was transported direct to site in large pre-assembled sections, which were then positioned and bolted together. The partially glazed roof slopes down towards the centre of the building, from where an integral gutter channels water from the roof through the ceiling void to the main drain. This design allowed the external lines of the building, especially at the roof / façade interface, to remain clean and uninterrupted without any external guttering or downpipes The glazing and cladding was installed in panels up to 4m long by 2.2m wide, reducing the number of transoms & mullions required, and creating a clear & open façade. The two sets of double doors along the front façade, and the one set of double doors at the rear, are as a precaution bomb blast enhanced to protect the occupants in the event of a terrorist attack on the airport.
